Current and former Centennial High School students are making news this week!
Girl Scout Senior Troop 1929 has some great news to share. Three members of their troop have earned the Silver Award, the highest recognition for Cadette Girl Scouts. Centennial High School freshmen Lily Fetcho, Melissa Johnson and Emily Moore recently earned the Silver awards for their winning project, "Be Cool: Recycool."
Designed to teach children about recycling, their project garnered the attention of the Howard County recycling coordinator who incorporated it into the county's recycling programming for summer camps and school presentations. The "Be Cool: Recycool" project includes a website and an original game, "Recycling Rhythms," that make it fun for kids to understand the importance of recycling.
In college news, third-year University of Virginia student Morgan Joseph is making waves as a member of the school's award-winning women's rowing team. The Centennial High school graduate has earned two Atlantic Coast Conference rowing championships and a 2010 NCAA national championship ring during her tenure with the team.
Morgan, a former local competitive swimmer and head coach of the Wilde Lake Watercats summer swim team, has also been named to the UVA dean's List and Jefferson Society. On Sunday, June 19, CBS television will air a special program that highlights the personal stories of student athletes. Joseph will be featured about her incredible journey on the rowing team which began as a walk-on. Congrats, Morgan!
Centennial High School culinary art students Kate Todorovich, Eray Akbas, Emily Hall and Jasmine Holland won first place in the Healthy Howard County lunch menu competition. The students' winning recipes for chicken salad wraps (main course) and teriyaki green beens (side dish) both placed first place in the countywide competition.
"Starting in the fall, the Centennial High School culinary team worked really hard to develop these recipes. In addition to their task to create great tasting food, the students also had to evaluate their recipes for nutritional content and cost," said Caitlin McBride, the team's food and consumer science teacher who worked with the culinary students.
Last week, the students were able to see the fruits of their labor when the Howard County school system offered their winning recipe on all of the county's high school lunch menus.
