Margaret DeB. "Peg" McAllen, a homemaker and volunteer who enjoyed writing, died May 28 of cancer at Gilchrist Hospice Care. She was 84.
Margaret DeBrodt was born in Baltimore and raised in Waverly. She was a 1943 graduate of Eastern High School.
She was married in 1946 to Willis "Mac" McAllen, a Chrysler Corp. sales representative, who died in 2000.
The couple lived for many years in Wiltondale. Mrs. McAllen moved in 2003 to Aigburth Manor, a Towson retirement home.
Throughout her life, Mrs. McAllen enjoyed writing and was a frequent contributor of letters to the editor on a variety of subjects, which were published in The Baltimore Sun.
She was also a longtime member of the Wednesday Writers Group.
"She liked writing about her days growing up in Waverly," said a son, Bill McAllen of Towson.
Mrs. McAllen also volunteered at Gilchrist Hospice Care as a grief counselor.
Family members said that Mrs. McAllen had celebrated 35 years of sobriety as a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.
She also had studied with the Church of Religious Science and at her death was a ministerial candidate.
A memorial service for Mrs. McAllen will be held 2 p.m. Aug. 13 at Towson Unitarian Universalist Church, 1710 Dulaney Valley Road.
Also surviving are two other sons, Jim McAllen of Lauraville and Jon McAllen of Parkville; and six grandchildren.
