Maryland Search and Rescue, in conjunction with Boy Scouts of America Venture Crew 616, will be holding their annual spring recruiting open house for adults and youth Monday, June 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church on Route 216, in Highland. MSAR is an exciting Venture Crew coed program that actively trains and deploys volunteers in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania to participate in wilderness lost-person searches. They admit that the training can be rigorous, but if you enjoy the outdoors, like to challenge yourself and want to give back to the community, this might just be the perfect thing for you. To join you must be at least 13 years old and have completed eighth grade or be 14 years old.
Meetings and training sessions are Mondays from 7-9 p.m. and usually one weekend per month. They'll be looking for you on Monday night. If you can't make it to the open house, you can get more information from Carl Solomon 410-531-2114 or Art Ross 410-740-2913.
Daisy Girl Scout Troop 58, under the direction of Karen Radcliffe, uses the pre-K room at Linden-Linthicum United Methodist Church two Tuesdays a month for their meetings. As a thank you, the girls planted and presented flower boxes to LLUMC to grace the office parking pad. What a lovely way to say, "Thank you."
Linden-Linthicum is holding a blood drive Sunday, June 5 and is hoping to double the usual number of donors at a time of year when blood donations tend to be in short supply. If you are one of the 96 percent of the medically eligible population who do not donate, here is your opportunity to change that statistic. You can call the church office at 410-531-5653 to schedule or learn more.
River Hill HS POMS will be holding tryouts Wednesday-Friday, June 8, 9 and 10 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Friday dancers are free to leave after their tryout. For more information, email coach Christie Ficke at rhhspoms@gmail.com.
Clarksville Middle School Principal Melissa Shindel is very proud of her students' commitment to charitable action. This year they raised $4,382.95 for the American Heart Association through Hoops for Hearts. They donated $1,000 to the American Red Cross in Hope for Japan and collected $3,061 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in the Pennies for Patients campaign. Way to go, kids.
The Maryland Association of Student Council recognized not one, but two River Hill High School staffers for their outstanding leadership with top honors at the MASC annual convention in Ocean City. Nick Novak received the MASC Wayne Perry Principal of the Year Award and teacher Kristin Mitchell received the MASC Mike Michaelson Advisor of the Year Award. Mitchell is the SGA adviser. Nearly 1,000 students from all over the state were present. Our River Hill SGA felt they could not begin to do justice to these two leaders in letters of recommendation and were thrilled at the awards. They appreciate knowing that Novak and Mitchell are always supportive and open to student suggestions.
