The Association of Community Services has announced the recipients of the 2011 Audrey Robbins Humanitarian Awards, who will be honored in a ceremony later this month.

The annual awards recognize individuals and groups who have "performed services above and beyond the call of duty" in the Howard County community, according to the organization.

This year's winners are:

• Volunteer of the Year: Don Bard, who helps provide access to computers to local students and their families who could not otherwise afford them through his Lazarus Foundation. Since Bard founded the organization in 1993, it has been able to refurbish more than 1000 computers for the community either for free or at low cost.

• Employee of the Year: Barbara Coleman, who, through her job as a senior paralegal at Maryland Legal Aid, Coleman has helped low-income residents fight eviction and obtain Social Security benefits for nearly 35 years.

• Volunteer Team of the Year: Neighbor Ride. Founded in 2004, Neighbor Ride helps seniors stay connected to the community by providing them rides to local appointments and events.

• Employee Team of the Year: makingCHANGE, a financial literacy group that organizes more than 60 seminars and one-one-one family sessions a year to help area residents obtain self-sufficiency.
