Catherine Marie "Katie" Kelly, who worked in banking and insurance and was a community volunteer, died of kidney failure Thursday at Stella Maris Hospice. The Towson resident was 50.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Northwood and Homeland, she was the daughter of Baltimore Sun reporter Jerome G. Kelly Sr. and Barbara Maulden Kelly, a teacher and Baltimore City Liquor Board inspector.

She worked at the Baltimore City Board of Elections Supervisors and became a waitress at Phillip's Restaurant in 1980 when it opened at Harborplace. She worked there until 1985, when she joined CitiCorp and later worked at America OnLine in Alexandria, Va. Her last job was with an insurer whose clients were members of the military.

She retired on a medical disability in 2001.

Ms. Kelly was a volunteer mentor at Harlem Park Elementary School in West Baltimore, and also volunteered at Our Daily Bread and Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium. She traveled extensively overseas and enjoyed time at Ocean City.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 5500 York Road, where she was a member.
