Robert J. Scymanski, a retired stone products executive who was an avid Yankees and Orioles fan, died Monday of cancer at Gilchrist Hospice Care. The Upperco resident was 91.
Mr. Scymanski was born in New York City and raised in Franklin, N.J., where he graduated in 1936 from Franklin High School.
He earned a bachelor's degree in 1941 in engineering from Purdue University and during World War II served in the Navy, where he attained the rank of ensign.
After the war, Mr. Scymanski went to work for Flintkote Co., where he rose to human relations director, and its successor companies, Genstar Stone Products Co. in Hunt Valley, which today is part of the LaFarge Corp.
Mr. Scymanski worked in New Jersey, Illinois and New York, before moving to Upperco. He retired from LaFarge Corp. in 1989.
In retirement, he was able to indulge his passion for baseball that spanned from the era of Babe Ruth, whom he had seen play when he was a youth at Yankee Stadium, to his "beloved Orioles in Camden Yards," said his wife of 63 years, the former Kathleen Nestor.
Mr. Scymanski also enjoyed gardening and travel.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church in Parkton.
Graveside services are private.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Scymanski is survived by a son, Robert J. Scymanski Jr. of Groton, Conn.; a daughter, Ellen Strbak of Chevy Chase; a sister, Margaret Revay of Franklin, N.J.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
