Police arrest one in shooting death of Edgewood 16-year-old

The Harford County Sheriff's Office has arrested an 18-year-old man for the shooting death of a 16-year-old as he sat in a car outside his Edgewood home, police said Sunday.

Michael S. Jones Jr. of the 1300 block of Rainbow Way in Edgewood, was charged Sunday with first-degree murder, assault and the use of a handgun in a violent crime, in connection with the Saturday night killing of Shakir D. Wingate, 16, of Edgewood. Jones is being held at the Harford County Detention Center without bail.

Deputies were dispatched to the 1200 block of Clover Valley Way in Edgewood at 8:54 p.m. and found the victim in the driver's seat of a vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds, police said. Wingate was taken to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Jones was arrested at his home a short time later, not far from the crime scene.

Police said there was no known motive, but the suspect and victim knew each other. Court records indicate that Jones has been in and out of Maryland courts in the last five months on charges of carjacking, robbery, assault, and drug possession.
