Mavis Maria Anderson, a Verizon employee who was depicted in a well-known 1970s cigarette ad photo, died of respiratory failure Sept. 23 at St. Agnes Hospital. The Westgate resident was 61.
Born in Baltimore and raised in Edmondson Village, she was a 1967 Edmondson High School graduate.
Family members said that as a young woman, she posed for Virginia Slims cigarette print advertisements that appeared in national magazines.
She worked at Commercial Credit Co. and in the advertising departments of Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone, MCI, AT&T and Verizon.
She enjoyed playing the Maryland Lottery at the Three Brothers store on Frederick Road.
Ms. Anderson worshipped at the Mount Olive Freewill Baptist Church in Baltimore for many years.
Services will be held 11 a.m. Sept. 30 at Chatman Harris Funeral Home, 5240 Reisterstown Road.
Survivors include a son, Edwin "Dink" Whittington III of Odenton; a daughter, Tiffany Parnell of Baltimore; her mother, Harriet Louise Anderson of Baltimore; a brother, Jerome "Skip" Anderson of Baltimore; and six grandchildren.
