State football roundup (Oct. 13): Corey Holmes' fumble recovery lifts Morgan State

Corey Holmes scored on a tie-breaking fumble recovery in the end zone late in the third quarter and Morgan State held on for an 18-11 win over Savannah State on Saturday night.

William King (Perry Hall) had 25 carries for 88 yards and DeAndre Harris was 11-of-16 passing for 159 yards and a score. Harris, who added 10 carries for 40 yards, had a 29-yard run to the 20 that set up Alex Raya's 24-yard field goal that opened the scoring midway through the first quarter.

The Tigers (1-5, 0-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference ) took the second-half kickoff and went 75 yards on nine plays culminated by D'Vonn Gibbons' 9-yard scoring run. He then hit Czar Beneby for the 2-point conversion that made it 11-all.

On the ensuing Morgan State (2-4, 2-1) possession, a pass interference against Savannah State on third-and-8 gave the Bears a fresh set of downs before Harris hit Holmes for 16 yards and, a few plays later, connected on another third-and-8 with Deontaye White for a 15-yard pass to the 1. King took the handoff but Mulik Simmons forced a fumble that Holmes recovered and Ray's extra point capped the scoring.

Gibbons was 15-of-27 passing for 219 yards with one interception and had 20 carries for 57 yards and a score for Savannah State. Morgan State is 11-0 all-time against the Tigers, who are moving to Division II at the beginning of the next school year.

Bowie State 20, Virginia State 15: Montez Clay (Dunbar) and Maurice Williams (St. Frances) led the way for host Bulldogs (5-2, 3-1 5-2, 3-1 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) and the Trojans fell to 3-3, 3-1. Both teams are 1-1 in the North Division..

Clay made four receptions for a team-high 55 yards and two touchdowns and Williams had 13 carries for 66 yards. The Bulldogs improved to 5-2, 3-1 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Trojans fell to 3-3, 3-1. Both teams are 1-1 in the North Division.

Salisbury 17, Montclair State 15: The host Sea Gulls (6-0, 5-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference) scored 17 points in the first quarter and held on to beat the Red Hawks (5-1, 4-1).

Jack Navitsky completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to Khari Chase for a 7-0 Salisbury lead with 10:56 left. Kadarrius Campbell had a 1-yard touchdown run with 4:43 left and Trevor Skoglund made a 36-yard field goal with 2:26 left to complete the 17-0 run.

Frostburg State 56, William Paterson 0: Connor Cox (South River) threw three touchdown passes during a 42-0 run in the second quarter and the host Bobcats (5-0, 4-0 New Jersey) shut out the Pioneers (0-6, 0-5).

The win marked the first 5-0 start since 1999, the third largest margin of victory in program history and the largest margin of victory in a shutout in 58 years.

Cox went 9 of 16 for a 133 yards. Frostburg State special teams scored twice during the second quarter on punt returns by Lincoln Ikwubuo (36 yards) and Christian Thornton (Arundel, 26 yards).

Stevenson 20, Widener 6: Ty Crabb threw a touchdown pass and rushed for another touchdown to lead the visiting Mustangs (5-2, 4-1 Middle Atlantic Conference) past the Pride (3-4, 3-2). Crabb had 19 carries for 61 yards and completed 7-for-11 for 53 yards. Stevenson's defense came up with big plays as Izaiha Pitts made a 38-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown and Hanif Jones had two interceptions.
