Michael Phelps' trial for drunken-driving charges has been postponed from later this month until Dec. 19 at the request of the swimmer's attorney.
Phelps, 29, was arrested Sept. 30 outside Fort McHenry Tunnel after being clocked going 84 mph in a 45-mph zone, Maryland Transit Authority Police said. He was charged with DUI, excessive speed and crossing double lane lines. His blood-alcohol level was 0.14 percent, and he failed field sobriety tests, police said. The state's legal limit is 0.08 percent.
A few days later, Phelps announced he was entering a six-week, in-patient treatment program to work on his personal life.
The drunken-driving arrest was Phelps' second. He previously pleaded guilty to driving while impaired after being arrested in 2004 in Wicomico County.
The record-setting Olympian's trial will be held in Baltimore District Court. It was initially scheduled for Nov. 19.
