Kris Wilson has become a favorite to land the third tight end spot on the Ravens after thinking earlier this month that he might not get another shot in the NFL.
Wilson was released by the San Diego Chargers on July 28 and was without a team for 11 days before signing with the Ravens just three days before their preseason opener.
"There are plenty of guys who are still at home right now," Wilson said. "I'm just thankful for the opportunity."
The eight-year veteran is making the most of that opportunity and appears to have the edge over Davon Drew for the backup spot behind Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta. He is tied for the team lead with seven catches this preseason and tops all Ravens tight ends with 83 yards receiving.
Fitting into the Ravens offense hasn't come as a surprise to Wilson or the coaching staff. He played in similar systems in Kansas City and San Diego.
"He's got a lot of knowledge having been with Gonzalez and Gates," offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said. "He picked things up quickly. I sense he's a very dependable guy."
