Jimmy Smith, the Ravens' first-round pick in the draft in April, tweaked his groin during the early stages of practice Monday, and the cornerback was held out of the remainder of practice at training camp at the team's practice facility in Owings Mills.

Smith, the 27th overall pick, pulled up while trying to shadow rookie wide receiver LaQuan Williams (Maryland) on a crossing route. Smith wore a bag of ice under his pants and did not return to the field.

Center Matt Birk did not practice. Birk, who had not missed practice prior to Monday, wore a wrap around his left knee.

In addition to Birk, wide receiver Hakeem Moore (unspecified) and defensive tackle Terron Sanders (unspecified) did not participate. The good news for the Ravens was that Ben Grubbs was activated off of the team's physically-unable-to-perform list, and the starting left guard practiced Monday. Grubbs had sat out the first three practices open to the media after undergoing minor ankle surgery in the offseason.

In addition to Grubbs, center Ryan Bartholomew (unspecified), offensive tackle Andre Ramsey (right calf/shin) and wide receiver Terrell Zachery (left knee) practiced.

Bartholomew filled in at center for Birk with the first offense.

A number of players who cannot practice until Thursday when the players re-certify as a union and ratify the new 10-year collective bargaining agreement attended practice. They included safeties Tom Zbikowski and Haruki Nakamura, linebackers Jameel McClain and Tavares Gooden, cornerback Chris Carr and offensive tackle Oneil Cousins.
