Gary Williams still a hot topic in retirement

It came to my attention recently that former men's basketball coach Gary Williams is making $400,000 a year as a special athletic department assistant.

The person who told me about the figure openly wondered if the former coach was getting paid too much. Plenty of others disagreed with that assessment, saying Williams is deserving of such a salary.

There are many ways approach this topic. You could argue that Williams' well-chronicled contributions over the years to Maryland merit such a nod from his alma mater. You could say the amount is excessive in this economy. You might make a case that Williams, a strong fund-raiser, will be worth at least his salary because of the donations he will attract.

Williams has long been a hot topic -- and sometimes a polarizing one -- on this blog, and I suspect he will continue to be, even in retirement. The Washington Post wrote about Williams' salary online today after obtaining his contract.

As always, I suspect you will not be shy about making your sentiments known.
