The Ravens announced their list of inactives for the preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday night, and what's notable is that rookie cornerback Jimmy Smith is not on that list.
In fact, the team announced that Smith, the team's first-round pick in April who has been hobbled by a groin injury, is slated to start. He returned to practice on Tuesday after making brief appearances on Saturday and Monday.
After Tuesday's session, coach John Harbaugh had indicated that Smith would likely not play against the Eagles, but this recent turn of events is somewhat bewildering.Linebacker Tavares Gooden (unspecified), wide receiver Justin Harper (unspecified) and offensive tackle Andre Ramsey (right hand) also are not on the list. Gooden was absent from Tuesday's practice, and both Harper and Ramsey left Tuesday's session early.
The Ravens did deactivate wide receivers David Reed (left wrist/physically-unable-to-perform list), James Hardy (hamstring) and rookie Rodney Bradley (unspecified), cornerback Domonique Foxworth (right knee) , running backs Ricky Williams and Matt Lawrence (unspecified), tight end Ed Dickson (hamstring), center Matt Birk (left knee), defensive tackle Brandon McKinney (knee) and offensive tackle Ramon Harewood (knee/physically-unable-to-perform list).
