Earthlings today reach out to yet another member of our solar system’s family. NASA’s Dawn spacecraft today slips into orbit around the asteroid Vesta. As wide as Arizona, Vesta is the second-biggest object in the main asteroid belt, between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Dawn’s approach photos of Vesta (left) are already twice as sharp as those from the Hubble Space Telescope. After a year at Vesta, Dawn will head for the dwarf planet Ceres.
