Flacco says he was "definitely shocked" by release of Heap and Mason

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco was "definitely shocked" when the team informed him that tight end Todd Heap and wide receiver Derrick Mason were getting released.

I'm hoping we can do everything we can to get those guys back. You are selfish sometimes, too. You look at it as value for our team, they are guys that are great to have on our team. I wouldn't want to do anything without those guys because they've been so much a part of this organization and this team and what we've been about the last couple of years.

Mason and Heap have been Flacco's two favorite targets since he joined the Ravens in 2008. They have combined to score over half of the receiving touchdowns in the Flacco era.

The team told Flacco about the moves before informing the players, a source said.

"I had no idea anything like that was going to happen," Flacco said. "You expect to come back and see some new faces just like every year. But definitely was not expecting to get rid of Derrick and Todd, It happens in this league so you've got to learn to not be surprised by those things but yeah, I wasn't even really thinking about that. I was thinking about getting back to playing football, getting back to normal life for us."

Flacco estimated that Heap could play for four or five more years. Mason has caught at least 60 passes each season with Flacco.

What happens if the Ravens are unable to bring them back?

"If those guys aren't there, it's because we are confident with the guys that we have," Flacco said. "We're confident in those guys taking that next step and really being able to take on a 16-game NFL schedule and beyond. I would say if they're not there, we know we have a great group of guys. If they are there, then we're only going to benefit from that."
