OUTER BANKS ENCOUNTER
"It's what you would call a 'local bar' — not a tourist-y bar — on the [North Carolina's Pamlico County] sound side called the Horny Toad Café," Jones says. "They had an open mic and I went to it and played and this woman started crying when I was playing a song. I never had anybody respond like that before. ... So when that happened, it moved me and made me want to write more songs like that. That particular song was an autobiographical, growing-up song. It made me want to write more serious stuff. It's funny, her crying made me feel good! Like I was doing something right. I was communicating something that somebody else could relate to … and I wanted to do more of that."
LIVE ALERT
Jones plays Pier Six Pavilion Sunday as part of Sunday Funday with Amos Lee, Josh Ritter, Eric Hutchinson, Mason Jennings and Bobby Long.
