Check out long-time Baltimore TV newsman Richard Sher Sunday at 8 a.m. on NBC's "Today."
Sher, who co-anchored at WJZ with a young Oprah Winfrey, in the 1970s and '80s, was enormously helpful and generous with his memories and analysis for a 3,500 word interview/profile of Winfrey that I have in Sunday's Sun magazine. Winfrey talks in that piece about some very hard times for her in Baltimore, and you can read about them online here.
There is going to be a ton of Oprah Winfrey coverage in coming days as her landmsark show ends. I believe the piece we have in the Sun will give you a context for understanding the monumental scale of what she accomplished -- and how the determined young woman who came to Baltimore became the pop phenomenon known as Oprah.
The accompanying picture shows Sher on the set of "Today" with host Lester Holt and Ileane Rudolph of TV Guide.
Sher was very supportive of Winfrey at a time when she needed someone to stand by her -- and the two have remained friends throughout their lives.
