Luke ailing, Hardy to Norfolk, Vlad gets day off (Update on Mummey)

Luke Scott is serving as the designated hitter today. He's been the Orioles' hottest hitter with a .344 average, four homers and 9 RBIs in his last eight games, and he's done it all with a really sore right shoulder. Scott admitted that he's concerned about his shoulder, but not enough to come out of the lineup. He did say it's possible that he could get it looked at when the club returns to Baltimore.

"My shoulder is the only thing that really concerns me," said Scott, who has also been dealing with some groin and hamstring soreness. "I've been in a lot of prayer about that. I don't know exactly what it's from. There's just some sore spots. I may get it checked out. I'll have more information when I go home. I'm not different than anybody else. We all have nagging injuries that we play through."

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said that shortstop J.J. Hardy will fly to Norfolk tomorrow, and then begin his rehab assignment for the Triple-A Tides on Friday. Hardy, who hasn't played since April 9 because of a left oblique strain, will be evaluated after each game, but if all goes well, he could rejoin the club during the Seattle Mariners series next week.

Brian Matusz got through his bullpen and live batting practice session fine. He'll throw two to three innings in an extended spring game on Saturday and then continue this rehab assignment at one of the affiliates.

Speaking of affiliates, Single-A Frederick center fielder Trent Mummey, who crashed into the center-field wall today and was taken from the field by a stretcher, will miss at least two weeks with concussion symptoms, said Orioles Director of Player Development John Stockstill.

Vladimir Guerrero is getting the day off tonight. Showalter said that he wants to give the veteran periodic days off, but he also wants to figure out ways to get Felix Pie in the lineup more. Showalter didn't rule out Pie starting tomorrow's series finale as well.
