The story of Harrington, Maryland and the NCAA

Joe Harrington has been a head coach at four different schools -- Hofstra, George Mason, Long Beach State and Colorado.

So when you saw him at Terps games a few seasons ago, it was easy to imagine he was still coaching. In fact, his title had become director of men's basketball student-athlete services -- a post that is not the same as a coaching assistant and one in which his duties were limited by NCAA rules.

It turned out there were questions about whether his activities with the team crossed those lines. Maryland says it investigated and self-reported secondary violations to the NCAA. As I note in an exclusive story today, Maryland was not penalized.

You may know that Harrington has a rich Maryland history. He played alongside Gary Williams for the Terps, and later was an assistant under Lefty Driesell, with whom he is still close. A sad part of the story is that a few years ago he had a falling out with Williams, a man he has known for more than 45 years.
