The Mount St. Joseph rugby team has rolled through the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association's regular season with an 8-0 record. It will go into Wednesday's championship game hoping to continue its run of perfection.
The Gaels face Calvert Hall (4-4) at MSJ at 4 p.m.
Led by Eric Sweeney, who has produced about 90 points this season, Mount St. Joseph is 14-1 overall. The Gaels have swamped almost everyone they've played, most recently beating Archbishop Spalding, 24-7, to earn their way to this title game.
And in its last meeting with the Cardinals, MSJ won, 26-3.
MSJ's only loss came at Gonzaga, where that team overloaded its backfield and beat the Gaels, 42-8. Since then Gonzaga has gone on to build a national ranking and qualify for the National High School Rugby Tournament in Utah
That one loss does nothing to minimize MSJ's performance in the MIAA, where it has outscored its opponents, 297-44. In MIAA play 19 of the team's 32 players have scored.
