As part of the online coverage leading up to the NFL draft, The Sun will look at prospects who could be available for the Ravens with the 26th overall pick.
BROOKS REED
Outside linebacker, Arizona
Height/weight: 6-2/263
Key statistics: Boosted his draft stock when he ran a position-best 1.54-second 10-yard split among defensive linemen at the NFL combine, which underscored his explosive first step.
Pro Football Weekly ranking: Unranked among top 10 linebackersWhy Ravens should draft him: Reed is a hard-worker who plays with effort and intensity. He's a dependable prospect who is a sure bet to be an every-down player. Reed would be a solid fit because he is a fiery leader and consistent pass rusher in college (17 sacks the past three seasons).
What should concern Ravens: While Reed is projected to play outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense, he has limited experience dropping back and hasn't shown a great ability to change directions. Reed also doesn't have great size and can get overpowered against the run. Another knock is he doesn't have a high ceiling.
What they're saying: "I am pretty sure I'll be drafted as a 3–4 outside linebacker. I have had contact with pretty much every team running a 3–4 defense and a few 4–3 teams. But I really don't know for sure." – Reed
Interaction with Ravens: Private workout with defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano last month
Bottom line: Reed would be the dependable safety net if Sergio Kindle can never play. A high-motor player known for being a leader, Reed would be a safe pick who could serve as the eventual replacement for Jarret Johnson. In fact, he's been compared to the Ravens linebacker (who will be a free agent next season). There's no question that Reed would improve the defense. But some would say drafting Reed at No. 26 is too high for a prospect who has limited upside.
