Baltimore-bred Neal hits NBA shot of the night

That's Gary Neal -- the former Aberdeen, Calvert Hall and Towson star -- hitting a deep 3-pointer off of one dribble and a quick turn at the end of regulation to send his San Antonio Spurs into overtime against the Memphis Grizzlies in game five of their first-round NBA playoff series.

And now, Neal's getting a ride as the latest out-of-nowhere, up-from-the-ground story about a guy who worked through obscurity to make it to this point.

But the definitive -- yeah, let's go there for now -- story on Neal's rise was penned by none other than Baltimore Sun intern John Meoli, who caught up with the  6-4 shooter in D.C. earlier this year. Meoli traces Neal's path after a sexual assault charge -- he was acquitted -- forced him to leave LaSalle and land at Towson before starting at the lowest levels of European ball despite having scored 1,000 points for two different colleges. It's worth a read. There's also an ESPN Outside the Lines segment on Neal that you should take the time to check out.
