I've always thought Joe Johnston was a super-square director -- his "October Sky" was the movie that should have been called "Vanilla Sky." But his goodhearted craftsmanship has been just right for projects like "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" and "Jumanji," and I appreciated the retro super-heroism he was going for in "The Rocketeer," even though it never reached full bloom. Judging from this trailer for "Captain America: The First Avenger" he may have found his dream assignment and got it right. Chris Evans has been giving dynamite performances for a decade, including his turns as the Human Torch in "The Fantastic Four" films, and Tommy Lee Jones appears to bring this big-budget adventure the same spark and vigor he brought to "The Fugitive." My only question: the movie opens July 22. Why not a July 4th opening for "Captain America," of all movies?
