RECORDING TRADITION

“The  producer’s name is Liam Watson (The White Stripes’

),” Long says. “His studio, Toe Rag studio, is just down from where I used to live in East London. He famously does everything in analog. Sometimes, people think just because he uses analog that he’s some kind of crazy scientist guy who refuses to acknowledge new technology. He doesn’t. He just records that way.  For me, his style very much keeps alive an old tradition of recording, which I think is the best way: put four musicians in a room together and [hit] record.”

HIGHER MUSICAL LEARNING
"I was starting to work as a touring musician and I had three months to write a 20,000 word thesis [for a degree in sound and media]," Long says. "Everybody wrote about acoustics, digital recording and compression units and I wrote mine about the impact of folk music being a vehicle, a voice for people and how it reflected in what was going on in a social context. It was really interesting reading about the civil rights movement and how that came about in Alabama."
