'American Idol' results: Top 9 revealed

Lest we forget, after last week's American Idol drama, with the judges unexpectedly using their onetime "save" on Casey Abrams, tonight, two contestants will be sent home.

Host Ryan Seacrest says that more than 55 million votes were cast last night, setting a record for this point in the competition.

Instead of a medley group sing, the Top 11 are being divided into groups. First up, are Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina, with "I Told You So." Their voices and their twanginess work well together. Amusingly, she keeps reaching out like she's going to touch his arm and then holds back at the last second. Just a little awkwardness, but they are just kids after all.

This leads right into results as this duet is called forward. They're both safe.

Naima Adedapo and Jacob Lusk are paired up for Ashford & Simpson's "Solid." They also work very well together (but the dance moves are a little corny). After the performance, they learn that Naima is in danger and Jacob is safe.

The results are broken up by a performance by Season 3 winner Fantasia, singing the old-school tinged single "Collard Greens & Cornbread." She's rocking a huge roll of blonde bangs that I can't take my eyes off of. She closes with a shoutout to Steven Tyler. "I love you!" she says.

Next, Haley Reinhart, Pia Toscano and Thia Megia perform Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream." I'm a little slow on the uptake, but it finally occurs to me that they are probably testing out material for the tour. Pia is safe, Haley is safe, and Thia is in the bottom three.

Usually, I don't go into great detail about the behind-the-scene montages (because they're really just filler after all), but this tidbit cracked me up: The Idols had to leave their amazing mansion life and go to a hotel because the roof was leaking. Like a lot.

The next grouping is the Idol house band, Paul McDonald, James Durbin, Casey Abrams and Stefano Langone. They perform "Band on the Run," and when it starts out, it's like a bad garage-band practice session, but they pull it together at the end. Thankfully. It's fun watching them all rock out together. Steven Tyler tells them they can open up for Aerosmith next tour.

Casey is safe, news that he handles a little better than last week. James is also safe. Stefano also is, but Paul is in the bottom three. Jamie Foxx, and a hearty dose of autotune perform along with a marching band's drumline and a samba-dancing troupe. They wanna party. They wanna samba. The end.

Wait, I forgot about the results. I got distracted by all those outfits. Paul is safe, which means that Thia and Naima are headed home.
