The Ravens reached an agreement in principle with seven-time Pro Bowl tight end Shannon Sharpe, who was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year.

It was considered the biggest free-agent signing in Ravens history at that point. It was also a major upgrade for the Ravens, whose previous tight ends included Harold Bishop, Frank Hartley, Eric Green, Aaron Pierce and Lovett Purnell.Sharpe played two seasons for the Ravens, but he made an impact on the franchise. During the Super Bowl run in 2000, Sharpe continually made the big plays on offense in the playoffs, which included a 96-yard touchdown pass in the AFC championship game.
