Ravens' home turf drops to No. 8 in player poll

The Ravens' playing surface dropped to No. 8 in a player poll ranking the best artificial fields in the NFL.

The artificial turf at M&T Bank Stadium ranked No. 7 in the 2008 poll. The players' union takes a survey on fields every two years.

The drop is surprising considering the Ravens just installed a new SportExe field before the 2010 season because the surface had begun to lose its softness. SportExe features 1 billion blades of green synthetic fibers with a base of sand and granular rubber.

It marks the lowest ranking for the Ravens since they changed from a grass field. With SportExe, the Ravens' playing surface ranked in the top seven in the past three player polls (No. 6 in 2004 and No. 7 in 2006 and 2008).

Here are the top-rated artificial playing surfaces in the 2010 poll:

1. Indianapolis (FieldTurf)

2. New York Giants/Jets (FieldTurf)

3. New Orleans (UBU Sports)

4. Seattle (FieldTurf)

5. Dallas (Hellas)

6. Atlanta (FieldTurf)

7. New England (FieldTurf)

8. Detroit (FieldTurf)

(tie) M&T Bank Stadium (Shaw Sportexe)

9. St. Louis (Astroturf)

10. Cincinnati (FieldTurf)

11. Minnesota (Shaw Sportexe)

12. Buffalo (Astroturf)
