With Signing Day less than a week away, a top priority for Randy Edsall and the rest of the Maryland coaching staff will be to solidify the commitment of Bowie cornerback Jeremiah Hendy.

Rivals.com reported this week that the Terps target has been looking elsewhere.

The Terrapins would love to find a way to get back into the picture with Jeremiah Hendy, a former strong Maryland commitment who has since shifted his attention to schools such as Virginia, Iowa and NC State.

FootballNewsNow.com reported that a recent meeting between Hendy and Edsall went well.

Hendy met with Randy Edsall after his hiring and was impressed, but has continued to go on official visits to other schools. Hendy went to Charlottesville last weekend and also is considering Iowa.• Maryland cornerback target Lafayette Pitts committed to Rutgers but is reportedly considering a visit to another Big East school.

Also, LaFayette Pitts from Woodland Hills - who recently committed to Rutgers - will visit Pitt this weekend and there is a feeling that he may be able to be brought back into the mix. The Rutgers people seem convinced he is a solid verbal and this is a courtesy visit but I've heard some different things about it and while it sure seems like he is headed to Rutgers, he is at least going to listen to what Pitt has to say.

Basketball recruiting

• The Hartford Courant reported this week that Connecticut is "showing interest" in Terps center target Desmond Hubert.

-Desmond Hubert, a 6-9 forward from Cream Ridge, New Jersey. He's class of 2011. UConn is still trying to decide whether it will look to add to the 2011 class that, right now, is Ryan Boatright, a point guard from East Aurora, Ill.

• Terps shooting guard signee Nick Faust's City squad dropped a 72-69 game to Largo on Monday.

City senior Nick Faust, a University of Maryland recruit who repeatedly heard chants of "overrated" from the Largo faithful, struggled from the perimeter through much of the night and missed 3 of 4 free throws in the last two minutes that could have altered the outcome. But Daniel was willing to forgive his senior, who finished with 19 points, and expects the Black Knights to make a serious push for a third consecutive 2A state title over the next seven weeks.

• Cincinnati.com this week posted a Q&A with Terps women's commitment Chloe Pavlech.

How many times have you had to explain the Maryland "Terrapin" mascot to your friends?

"Too many times. They're like, 'Chloe…a turtle?' It's a snapping turtle, I tell them to 'fear the turtle' every time Maryland wins.
