The first-place Capitals made a deal Tuesday, trading forward Tomas Fleischmann to the Avalanche for veteran defenseman Scott Hannan. Hannan is a stay-at-home defender, something the Capitals need more of, but he's old, slow and has a sizable salary cap number which could hamstring them at the trade deadline.

Say what you want about Fleischmann as a physical presence and a three-zone player, but dude has some skill. Don't be surprised if he plays a significant role in Colorado. We'll see about Hannan in D.C.

Alex Ovechkin has gone seven games without a goal, but he has played better since drawing criticism for chatting it up with countryman Ilya Kovalchuk after an especially ugly loss to the Devils last week. In the three games since the incident, he has taken 18 shots on goal, tallied six assists and is a plus-four.

Ovechkin has been helped out by Alexander Semin, whose four goals in the past two games gives him 18 on the season — the second-highest total in the NFL (he trails Steve Stamkos and is tied with Sidney Crosby).

And the goaltending carousel continues to spin, with Seymon Varlamov playing well, Michal Neuvirth being healthy enough to ride the bench and Braden Holtby getting sent back to Hershey.

Washington travels to St. Louis on Wednesday then to Dallas the following night.
