Bills officially claim Merriman

The Buffalo Bills claimed Shawne Merriman on Wednesday, a day after coach John Harbaugh said the Ravens would have interest in the pass rusher if he had passed waivers.

The Bills desperately need to improve their pass rush after Aaron Schobel retired and first-round pick Aaron Maybin continues to disappoint. But it was surprising that a winless team would pick up Merriman's the pro-rated portion of his $3.2 million salary.

If the Bills hadn't picked up Merriman, he still wouldn't have cleared waivers. Tampa Bay and Miami also put in claims.

The Ravens didn't put in a claim for the former University of Maryland star.
