Projecting AFC West

Over the next week, The Sun's Jamison Hensley gives his predictions on how each of the NFL divisions will unfold this season. As always, this is not an exact science.

AFC West

1. Oakland: Yes, the Raiders. You read this correctly. Starting quarterback Jason Campbell won't self-destruct like JaMarcus Russell. The defense will be much improved. This is the season where cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is recognized as the NFL's top defensive player.2. San Diego: The Chargers are the usual favorite to win the division. But there are serious questions at wide receiver (Vincent Jackson is a holdout) and left tackle (Marcus McNeill is another holdout). Chemistry problems could haunt San Diego this season.

3. Kansas City: The Chiefs have the coordinators from the Patriots' championship teams (Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel) but they lack the talent. It could take a while to rebuild because quarterback Matt Cassel looks overmatched.

4. Denver: Head coach Josh McDaniels has removed the players who never bought into his program. But McDaniels might not like what's left. The Broncos are a shell of what they used to be.
