The Ravens will open the preseason somewhat thin in the cornerback position.

The team announced that Fabian Washington and Chris Carr will not play in Thursday night's game against the Carolina Panthers at M&T Bank Stadium.

Carr hasn't practiced since last Saturday when he injured his left hamstring, while the decision on Washington is likely precautionary as he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on Nov. 22.

With Lardarius Webb (knee surgery) still on the team's physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list and K.J. Gerard (hamstring) also ruled out, the Ravens plan to start Travis Fisher and Cary Williams at cornerback, and rookie Prince Miller could see extended time as the nickel back.

The team also deactivated, free safety Ed Reed (hip surgery - PUP), offensive tackles Jared Gaither (back spasms) and Tony Moll (concussion), linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo (quadriceps surgery - PUP), running back Matt Lawrence (knee surgery - PUP) and safety Marcus Paschal (right leg).

Tom Zbikowski will start for Reed, while Oniel Cousins will fill in for Gaither.

The Panthers deactivated wide receivers Steve Smith (broken forearm), Trent Guy (hamstring) and Charly Martin (finger), running backs Jonathan Stewart (heel) and Mike Goodson (ankle), offensive tackles Jeff Otah (knee) and Garry Williams (shoulder), linebackers Thomas Davis (torn anterior cruciate ligament) and Jordan Senn, cornerback Chris Gamble (knee) and safety Aaron Francisco (hamstring).

Kenny Moore will start for Smith, Geoff Schwartz for Otah and Captain Munnerlyn for Gamble.
