The Baltimore-based drama will be shown without commercials or cuts, according to DIRECTV.

The satellite TV service has partnered with NBC to keep "Friday Night Lights" on the air by providing a second revenue stream. Clearly, the folks at DIRECTV feel quality drama is good business.

"Thought provoking, powerful series like The Wire are few and far between. By adding The Wire to our Sunday night lineup, we are further cementing The 101 Network's reputation as a destination for the most highly acclaimed dramas on television," Patty Ishimoto, vice president and general manager of DIRECTV's The 101 Network, said in a release announcing the acquisition.
