Maryland announces search committee for AD

A 17-member search committee to select the University of Maryland's next athletic director has been formed, president C.D. "Dan" Mote Jr. announced Tuesday.

Among the noteworthy names on the committee is men's basketball coach Gary Williams, the university's highest-profile coach. He had a strained relationship with outgoing athletic director Debbie Yow.

Also on the committee is women's basketball coach Brenda Frese. Frese has a clause in her contract that says: "In the event Dr. Deborah A. Yow should leave her position as Athletic Director while Coach is serving as Head Women's Basketball Coach ... the University will appoint the coach as a regular voting memer to such search committee as may be established to find candidates for the vacant position."

My take: What a nice bit of negotiating by Brenda Frese and/or her agent-attorney to get the clause in her contract. If I ever need an agent/attorney, that's the one I want.

The committee will conduct a national search for Yow's replacement. Yow will leave Maryland on July 10 to take the same position at North Carolina State.
