FROM TODAY'S PRINT EDITIONS:
Sam Cohen, in Rosedale, asks how hurricanes would affect oil from the Gulf oil blowout: “Would it pick up the oil and drop it into the marshlands and cities, further fouling things up?” NOAA says high wind and waves speed “weathering” and bio-degradation of the oil. Rain wouldn’t be contaminated because hurricanes draw water vapor from such a wide area. But storm surges east of the eye could wash the slick inland, adding crude to debris and other storm-caused spills.
