'Run, don't umpire.'

That was manager Dave Trembley's message to Garrett Atkins today after the Oriole didn't run hard to first base on a sixth-inning grounder down the third base line.

Atkins thought the ball was going foul two different times before it bounced into fair territory. If he had run, he would have had an easy infield single, but instead, Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez threw him out by several steps.

Trembley glared at Atkins from the dugout, but he did not yank him from the game.

"Atkins thought the ball was foul two different times, and it came in fair," Trembley said. "He should be responsible for that. I told him, 'Run, don't umpire.' "

Atkins explained the process that led to his not running the ball out.

"I thought it was foul," he said. "I saw it bounce on one side of the line, then I stopped myself, started to go just one of those plays where you think it was foul a couple times and it ends up staying fair."
