Minor league game recaps -- May 1

The Triple-A Norfolk Tides won in a low-scoring matchup with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, while the Double-A Bowie Baysox continued to struggle with a loss to the Richmond Flying Squirrels.

The Single-A Frederick Keys played extra baseball to beat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, and the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds wrapped up their road trip by winning against the Asheville Tourists.

Norfolk Tides (AAA)

Score: Norfolk Tides 2, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 1 (Box score)

Recap: Starting pitcher Troy Patton (2-3) only gave up one run and five hits in seven innings as the Tides edged Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 2-1, at Harbor Park.

Patton struck out four batters and didn't walk anyone. He threw 64 of his 100 pitches for strikes.

Norfolk right fielder Corey Patterson was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and third baseman Justin Turner added a double and an RBI.

Relief pitcher Frank Mata recorded his fourth save of the season for the Tides after holding the Yankees scoreless in the ninth inning.Bowie Baysox (AA)

Score: Richmond Flying Squirrels 6, Bowie Baysox 4 (Box score)

Recap: First baseman Robbie Widlansky hit his first home run of the season, but the Baysox suffered a 6-4 loss to Richmond.

It was Bowie's seventh consecutive defeat.

Baysox starting pitcher Chorye Spoone (1-3) was roughed up again, allowing four runs (three earned) and seven hits in four innings. The 24-year-old right-hander collected one strikeout, issued two walks and threw two wild pitches.

Second baseman Paco Figueroa, designated hitter Ryan Adams and shortstop Pedro Florimon each picked up an RBI for the Baysox.

Frederick Keys (A)

Score: Frederick Keys 7, Myrtle Beach Pelicans 3, 15 innings (Box score)

Recap: The Keys scored four runs in the top of the 15th inning to earn a 7-3 victory over Myrtle Beach.

Frederick relief pitcher Brandon Cooney (2-0) tossed two scoreless innings to pick up the win, and starting pitcher Ryan O'Shea allowed three runs and four hits in six innings.

Keys third baseman Billy Rowell and second baseman L.J. Hoes each collected three hits, while designated hitter Bobby Stevens contributed two RBIs.

In the eighth, Frederick center fielder Kyle Hudson stole all three bases, including home plate as part of a double steal with left fielder Xavier Avery taking second on the play.

Delmarva Shorebirds (A)

Score: Delmarva Shorebirds 9, Asheville Tourists 3 (Box score)

Recap: Starting pitcher Matt Hobgood (2-1) held Asheville to one run and four hits in six innings as the Shorebirds cruised to a 9-3 win. The 19-year-old right-hander struck out four batters and walked three.

Delmarva right fielder Brian Conley was 3-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored, and center fielder Steve Bumbry also picked up three hits and two runs scored.

Shorebirds second baseman Tyler Kelly added a double and two RBIs, and first baseman Tyler Stampone and designated hitter Michael Ohlman each had two hits.
