Maryland hoops recruiting class ranked 21st

Like other college basketball fans, Terps backers pay great attention to recruiting -- sometimes more than they pay to the games, or to their spouses or the quest for world peace.

Recruiting is critical, of course. So let's look at one assessment of how Maryland did with its incoming class.

According to information from ESPN.com and the ACC, Maryland's class rates 21st in the nation. Maryland was among seven ACC schools to crack the Top 25 classes. There was

North Carolina at 2, Duke at 5, Wake Forest at 8, Florida State at 12, NC State at 14, Maryland at 21 and Virginia at 22.

By the way, the late signing period ends May 19. I talked to Gary Williams a few weeks ago, and he told me that the Terps would have one scholarship left to give. He said they're not going to force it on a kid who is not a good fit.

If last year's class was size-oriented (forward-center Jordan Williams and forward James Padgett), this year's is more guard--oriented.

Gary Williams said that Terrell Stoglin and Pe'Shon Howard are "combo guards." They can play the "1" or the "2." Maryland asks lot of its guards. Multi-faceted Sean Mosley, a guard-forward hybrid, is an example.

It's interesting to note the varying ACC schools' philosophies. Florida State, for example, really emphasizes height (it's trendy to say "length."). Take a look at the Seminoles' incoming class and you'll see. I've included, courtesy of the ACC, all the recruits at the end of this post. Last year, Maryland's guard-oriented team bested Florida State's height-oriented team. The Seminoles struggled at times with experienced guards such as Greivis Vasquez and Eric Hayes. Not that Maryland wouldn't mind having a 7-footer such as Florida State's Solomon Alabi, who declared for the NBA draft.
