On last night's "The Daily Show," Steve Carell and Jon Stewart followed a howlingly unfunny bit -- Stewart pretending not to know Carell -- with some fresh, spontaneous repartee. Stewart set off a clever give-and-take when they both stared into the same camera and he asked, "Why did I get older and you didn't?" But I think the host got it wrong.

Carell may have kept his hair color but he's the one who's gotten older. Watching him act with Tina Fey in "Date Night" (above) I thought I was seeing a second remake of "The Out-of-Towners." Carell and Fey use their offhand wit and improv timing to keep the marital-strain slapstick tolerable and even goodhearted, but their work here is joyless.

As a romantic team they're wholesome and attractive, and sometimes even naughty in their wholesome and attractive way. But there's no electric connection. Carell and Stewart had more instinctive rapport on "The Daily Show." Carell killed Stewart's studio audience when he said he came up with a tag line for the movie: "It's a date!" How many of you are going to make it one this weekend?
