Bottle tax for Baltimore: Frugal Dilemmas

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has proposed a four-cent tax on beverage containers such as water, beer and soda bottles as part of her budget for the next fiscal year. (Milk, juice and two-liter bottles would be exempt.)

The nearly $11 million in revenue is desperately needed to maintain city services in a tough economy, the mayor says, but opponents say the tax will encourage people to drive to the county when stocking up on drinks.
