Arts: Boxing opera a real knockout

IN THE CUT 'Shadowboxer'
Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center

I’ve been saying it for a while now — what opera really needs is an ode to boxer Joe Louis (right, photo by Cory Weaver). So thanks, University of Maryland College Park’s school of music/Clarice Smith for commissioning this innovative work from the Maryland Opera Studio. Frank Proto and John Chenault penned the look at the ups and downs in the life of the pioneering “Brown Bomber.” Adding to the freshness: mixing in projected images, a jazz band and a 12-member chorus. 7:30 p.m. Friday and  3 p.m. Sunday. Ina and Jack Kay Theatre, intersection of Stadium Drive and University Boulevard, College Park. $32, $9 students.
