Each day leading up to the NFL draft, The Sun will analyze a position on the Ravens and rank its priority:
Quarterback
Where the Ravens stand now: Joe Flacco took heat for his sophomore season, but he remains the Ravens' franchise quarterback. After getting criticized for some costly interceptions and errant throws, he still recorded the fifth-most productive first two seasons in NFL history, ranking behind Peyton Manning, Dan Marino, Drew Bledsoe and Jeff Garcia. Backup quarterback Troy Smith requested a trade through his agent, but no team was willing to give up a fifth-round pick to acquire the restricted free agent. Still, his intentions didn't sit well with the team, which likely will affect Smith's long-term status with the team. Third-string John Beck should get a chance to compete with Smith for the No. 2 job.
Players who could be on Ravens' radar: Armanti Edwards, Appalachian State.
Priority: Low. The Ravens are set for now with one of the youngest quarterback groups in the NFL. If the Ravens wanted to add a quarterback, it should be a dependable free agent. A veteran sounding board like Todd Collins could be an asset for Flacco.
One quarterback prospect who has drawn the Ravens' interest is Edwards, who is considered a mid-round talent because he is projected to be a multi-purpose player (quarterback, slot receiver, return specialist). Ravens wide receiver coach Jim Hostler attended Edwards' Pro Day, where he did position drills as a quarterback and a receiver. He could be a playmaker in specially designed offenses.
