News Corp. buys gaming company

Is this the beginning of a trend -- news companies getting into online gaming to attract and retain eyeballs on their sites?

The LA Times business blog -- Company Town -- reports that News Corp., which own the WSJ and Fox, has bought a small game developer based in San Francisco. The developer, Irata Labs, has made a social game for Twitter called Spymaster (I've never played it).

Irata also made a tool called iList Micro, which "let users search Twitter as they would classified advertising sections, to find items offered for sale by ZIP code or category."

It would be interesting to see if other big media companies follow suit. But so many are hurting with big debt that acquisitions may not be in the picture for awhile.
