Giant Food closes unprofitable Starbucks stands

Giant Food discovered that not everybody wants to sip a latte or chai tea while they shop for groceries.

The Landover-based chain and largest supermarket in the region said it closed nine Starbucks locations in Giant grocery stores. The closings were completed between Feb. 22 and Mar. 31.

The grocer still operates 12 Starbucks locations.

Van Houtte automated coffee kiosks were put in place of the Starbucks.

A spokeswoman said the grocer closed Starbucks locations that weren't profitable and didn't appear as if they would be profitable in the future. The grocer worked in conjunction with Starbucks to decide which to close.

I noticed last week that the Starbucks at the Giant in Towson on York Road had closed. Anyone else out there notice any closings?

Update:  So I found out that Giant closed an additional 17 Starbucks locations in August and September. The stores in the Baltimore area included:

7200 Cradlerock Way in Columbia

6223 Baltimore National Pike in Baltimore

2323 Forest Drive in Annapolis
