If you have a Coby portable DVD player, better check to see if it's model number TF-DVD 1020 or TF-DVD 8501.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has reannounced battery recalls for about 32,000 sold with Coby portable DVD/CD/MP3 players first mentioned in October 2008 and again in 2009 after 22 reports of the batteries overheating and 18 additional reports of fires with the 1020 model. There were 17 reports of property damage, including one incident that was estimated to cost more than $9,000.

Few models were returned to the manufacturer despite the earlier announcements.

The TF-DVD 1020 models were sold at different retailers around the country from May 2007 through July 2008 for about $168. The TF-DVD 8501 models were sold from January 2007 through September 2009 for between $140 and $275.

For the serial numbers for the recalled batteries, check the CPSC announcement. If you've got one, remove the battery until you get a replacement from Coby (call (866) 945-2629 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays or visit www.cobyusa.com).
