Check out Scholar Athlete Academy in Howard County

Former Oakland Mills soccer star Cory Marcon, who will soon be completing his second year at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, was looking for a summer job last year and didn't want to flip burgers.

The alternative he came up with has become its own brand: The Scholar Athlete Academy.

The program offers individual or small group training sessions for young players of any age in soccer, boys and girls lacrosse, basketball, football, track and wrestling with some of Howard County High School's top former scholar athletes providing instruction.

In addition to Marcon specializing in soccer training, the other instructors include Rick Go (football and track), Colin Orr (boys lacrosse), David Pearman (basketball), Kristen Bilney (girls lacrosse) and Bryce Harley (wrestling).

Marcon's original idea last year was a 10-week soccer camp on Saturdays through the summer months -- providing a more extensive and longterm experience than the typical week-long summer camps.

But he quickly learned how difficult it was for perspective campers to commit to the extended program, so he decided on a program that was more convenient to the kids with more one-on-one attention.

He finished with 10 clients -- ages ranging from 7 to 17 and the goal for this summer is to have a combined 50 to 60 clients among all the different sports that are now being offered. To learn more, go to www.scholarathleteacademy.com
