We're hitting the home stretch at The Next Level, as some teams concluded regular-season play this past week. Of course, there are still conference and postseason tournaments, and we plan to keep on rolling until every player from the Baltimore area has played his or her last minute of the season.
This week's men's top five features three new faces and has a distinctly local flavor – even more so than usual – as those three are all from schools in Maryland. Here's the list, in no particular order:Loyola's Jamal Barney (Southwestern) makes his debut in the top five this week. The junior guard averaged 22.0 points and 8.5 rebounds (including 4.0 offensive boards) over two games. Also making his first appearance is Towson sophomore guard Troy Franklin (Mount Carmel), who posted averages of 20.5 points, 5.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds in two contests. Completing the trio of state college players is Morgan State sophomore forward Kevin Thompson (Walbrook), who scored 20.5 points and pulled down 12.0 rebounds (6.0 offensive) over a pair of games.
The last two members of the top five will be familiar to you if you've been reading all season, as they are mainstays. New Mexico State's Jahmar Young (Du Bois) averaged 21.5 points and shot a combined 5-for-9 from 3-point range over two contests. Virginia Tech's Malcolm Delaney recorded averages of 24.0 points and 5.0 assists in two games.
An honorable mention goes to Maryland's Sean Mosley (St. Frances), who shook off a recent shooting slump to average 18.5 points on 12-for-16 shooting from the field and 10-for-11 shooting from the foul line in two games. Mosley added 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists.
