But Northern Iowa, the new tournament darlings, just knocked off Kansas, making the Jayhawks the first top seed to fall.

So the Terps would get Northern Iowa on Friday in St. Louis if they can beat the Spartans first.

Maryland players and assistant coaches were intently watching the Kansas game in their dressing room at Spokane Arena and doing a little cheering for Northern Iowa.

Officially, the line from Maryland was that it needs to focus on Spartans -- and that's true. But the Terps are human. Nothing wrong with peering into the future, if only to give it a passing thought.
