If you haven't seen my feature on Morgan State senior guard Reggie Holmes, Baltimore's best-kept basketball secret, check it out on our web site (here's the link). Holmes is a local product who starred at Southern High then St. Frances, then went on to become the all-time leading scorer at Morgan last week.

Holmes has averaged 22.4 points per game in his senior season. Even though he's among the Division I leaders in shot attempts, he's an unselfish player who is greatly respected by his teammates and coach (I discuss this hardcourt dichotomy in the story). Holmes has shot 39.7 percent from the field this season, including 37.0 percent from beyond the arc. The slick shooter is a throwback, and a lot of fun to watch. If you didn't get the chance to see him play, you missed out.

Not a lot of local sports fans seem to know about the success of Holmes and the Bears over on Cold Spring Lane these past few years (I'll blame the red-hot Terps for the ignorance this year). The Bears have won three straight MEAC regular season titles and are going for back-to-back MEAC tournament titles this week. They went 15-1 in conference play, and they have the MEAC player of the year (Holmes), defensive player of the year (Kevin Thompson), freshman of the year (DeWayne Jackson), and coach of the year (Todd Bozeman).

And if Holmes has his way, they'll be playing Cinderella next week in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
